Carpet weaving in the Asadabad region of Hamedan, as one of the authentic expressions of Iran’s traditional arts, holds a distinct cultural and historical significance. However, economic, social, and cultural changes in the contemporary era have led to notable transformations in the technical and structural features of these carpets. The necessity of this study stems from the need to understand how traditional weaving practices have persisted or evolved under modern cultural influences. Accordingly, this research aims to analyze the technical characteristics of Asadabad carpets within the context of contemporary cultural transformations.
The main research question is: How have modern cultural changes affected the technical characteristics of carpet weaving in the Asadabad region of Hamedan? The study is fundamental in nature and follows a descriptive–analytical approach, with data collected through library research, field observations, and direct examination of carpets woven over the past century.
Findings reveal that the weaving system in Asadabad has gradually shifted from a traditional self-employed model to a semi-centralized, employer-based structure. This transition has influenced fiber selection, warp-setting techniques, and color composition. Nevertheless, authentic carpets of the region are still woven using Turkish knots, Turkish-style warping, and a single-weft structure, reflecting the persistence of local craftsmanship and visual identity. Overall, the results indicate that while Asadabad carpets have adapted to modern socio-cultural changes, they continue to embody the enduring values of Iran’s traditional art and represent a meaningful interaction between heritage and modernity.
